Troop Training Guide: Types, Tiers & SvS Points

The Three Troop Types
Whiteout Survival uses a rock-paper-scissors combat system with three troop types. Each type has a natural advantage against one type and a disadvantage against another. Building a balanced or specialised force requires understanding these relationships:
| Troop Type | Strong Against | Weak Against | Best Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infantry | Lancer | Marksman | Frontline, rally battles, defense |
| Lancer | Marksman | Infantry | Flanking, alliance rallies |
| Marksman | Infantry | Lancer | Ranged damage, garrison defense |
Most endgame players maintain a mixed force, with specific ratios tuned for different battle scenarios. Use the Squad Formation Calculator to plan troop compositions across your squads.
Training Tiers
Troops are trained in tiers โ T1 through T11. Higher-tier troops are significantly more powerful in combat but take longer to train and cost more resources per unit.
Which Tier to Train
As a general rule: always train the highest tier you have unlocked. Low-tier troops are cannon fodder in late-game combat and become increasingly inefficient as a resource investment.
- T1โT2: Only relevant in the very early game while higher tiers are locked
- T3โT5: Good for building a foundation; expect to maintain these throughout mid game
- T6โT11: Where endgame combat power concentrates; unlock as soon as your Furnace allows
Unlocking higher troop tiers requires both Furnace level milestones and completing the relevant War Academy research nodes.
Training Speed & Capacity
Training speed determines how quickly troops are produced. Capacity determines the maximum number of troops you can have. Both are critical for efficient troop development.
Factors That Affect Training Speed
- Training Grounds level: Higher buildings = faster training base rate
- Research nodes: Training speed research in the Research Center compounds with other bonuses
- Hero skills: Some heroes have training speed as a passive skill; assign these heroes
- Alliance technology: Alliance-wide training speed bonuses benefit all members
- VIP bonuses: Higher VIP levels provide training speed at certain thresholds
Troop Capacity
Troop capacity is determined primarily by your Command Center level. You cannot have more troops than your capacity allows โ hitting the cap stops training entirely. Upgrade the Command Center in parallel with the Furnace to avoid capacity bottlenecks.
Speedups: When to Use Them
Training speedups are a limited resource. The general rule: use them on the highest-tier troops that have the longest training queues. Spending speedups on T1 troops is almost always a waste.
Strategically, many players save training speedups to mass-train during SvS events, because SvS rewards SvS points for troops trained during the event window. You can effectively "convert" speedups into SvS points this way.
Troop Promotion
An alternative to training from scratch is promotion โ upgrading existing lower-tier troops into higher-tier equivalents. Promotion is generally more resource-efficient than training from T1, but it requires you to already have the lower-tier troops and the promotion resources.
Promotion also counts toward SvS points in some SvS configurations, making it a viable SvS preparation strategy alongside direct training.
SvS Points from Troop Training
During SvS events, completing troop training and promotions awards SvS points that contribute to your alliance's SvS score. The point value depends on the troop tier and quantity.
Optimising SvS training involves:
- Starting long training queues just before SvS so they complete during the event window
- Saving speedups to mass-complete queues during the event for burst SvS points
- Knowing your target troop count and working backward to calculate how many speedups you need
Troop Healing
Troops that are wounded in battle (rather than killed) go into the hospital. They can be healed back to full using healing speedups and resources. Healing is almost always more efficient than training new troops from scratch, so always heal your wounded before training replacements.
Hospital capacity is determined by Hospital building level. Increase it to avoid wounded troops dying because they couldn't be admitted.
